Benefits of Proper Firewood

Using the right firewood is crucial for keeping your flue cleaner and preventing creosote buildup. Hardwoods like oak, maple, and ash provide a steady, high-temperature burn that produces less smoke. Less smoke means less creosote, the sticky residue that can clog chimneys and flues.

Avoid burning softwoods like pine, which produce more smoke and contribute to creosote buildup. Properly seasoned wood, which has been dried for at least six months, will burn cleaner and more efficiently than green or moisture-laden wood.

Seasoning Firewood

Seasoning your firewood is a critical step to ensure it burns efficiently. Cut wood to size and stack it in a dry, well-ventilated area to allow air to circulate. Cover the top of the pile to protect from rain while leaving the sides open for airflow. Properly seasoned wood will have cracks in the end grain and will feel significantly lighter than freshly cut logs.

Checking the moisture content with a meter can confirm if your wood is ready for burning. Aim for a moisture content of 20% or less for the best results. Dry wood burns hotter and cleaner, reducing the amount of smoke and creosote produced.

Storage and Handling

Proper storage of firewood helps maintain its quality and readiness for burning. Ensure wood is stored off the ground on pallets or a similar structure to prevent moisture absorption. Keep the woodpile away from your home to reduce the risk of pests and allow ample airflow.

When handling firewood, stack it neatly and avoid overloading your fireplace with logs, which can cause poor burning conditions and contribute to chimney blockage. Regularly check your wood supply, and restock in advance to allow new wood to season before use.
